On this page
1. Find a form that fits the engagement
Open Tax Forms. The page is titled Tax Form Generator and provides Search forms, a status filter and an ID sort control. Review the form name, type and Published or Pending status.
Use the client and service context to narrow the choice. The library includes individual and business questionnaires, new- and current-client variants, short and long variants, and planning or analysis intake. If search returns nothing, clear it, reset the status filter and browse the list before assuming a form is unavailable.
2. Open Preview and identify the view
Open the form, then choose Preview. Read the preview notice: inputs entered there will not be saved. Use Preview as to inspect Everyone, Tax Expert or Customer where those choices are offered.
This is a way to inspect the form layout for a selected view. It does not establish account permissions or prove that a client received a questionnaire. Do not enter real taxpayer details into a test preview.
3. Inspect follow-up questions and repeatable sections
Check the question that reveals a follow-up section before reviewing the fields inside it. In the captured test-form example, choosing Yes for Do you have any dependents? exposes a repeatable dependents area.
Review labels, required markers and the controls for adding another entry. Test only with non-identifying examples. For a real engagement, select a form whose period and questions fit the client; a test template is useful for demonstrating behavior, not a recommendation to send it.
4. Match the form to the work
| Engagement | Library examples to inspect |
|---|---|
| Individual preparation | 1040 Individual Return or the relevant individual questionnaire. |
| Business preparation | 1065 Organizer - Partnership, 1120 S Organizer or 1120 C-Corp Business Return, according to the actual entity and work. |
| Planning or initial analysis | Individual Tax Planning Questionnaire, Tax Analysis Intake Form or Tax Savings Analysis. |
Preview the actual questions before choosing. Similar names can describe different audiences or lengths. In Create Contract → Tax Organization Form, use Add questionnaire or the template selection controls, then review the selected forms count and titles before completing the agreement.
5. Respect read-only forms and check the real response
An admin-created form can display the notice This form was created by an admin and cannot be edited. Treat that notice as the edit restriction even if builder controls remain visible. If the form needs a change, seek the appropriate form owner rather than assuming a control will save it.
After a questionnaire is actually assigned, inspect the client’s response state before using its answers. A filled preview, a published template and a completed client response are three different things.
Common questions
Are preview answers saved?
The preview notice explicitly says inputs entered will not be saved. Use the client’s actual questionnaire response to review intake.
Does Published mean my client completed it?
No. Published is a form-library status. Check the assigned questionnaire and its response state for that client.
What does Preview as Customer prove?
It lets you inspect the Customer preview view. It does not confirm delivery, permissions or completion in a real client account.
Why can’t I edit an admin-created form?
The builder can display an explicit notice that the form was created by an admin and cannot be edited. Respect that restriction and ask the appropriate owner for changes.
